2017 Reese Lecture – King’s College

The prestigious Reese Lecture at the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies is given annually in honour of Dr Trevor Reese, a distinguished historian of the British Commonwealth and Australia and Reader at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. This lecture is always given by a younger scholar in the disciplines of history or political science.

The Menzies Centre invites members of the Britain-Australia Society to attend the lecture.

Heart, Power, Treaty, Truth: Affective, political performances in (post) Reconciliation Australia

The ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’ of May, 2017 was part of a long lineage of peace building between native and settler peoples, in a context of a global mood of reconciliation and redress. Penelope’s paper explores how such activities have sought to alter the moral order and may now be seen as risky but critical rites of passage in settler societies.
