    ANZAC Day 2019

    London turns out in force for the annual ANZAC Day commemorations. It is a long day with several services and all are attended by representatives of the Britain-Australia Society. 

    Members of the Britain-Australia Society have been allocated a block of seats at Westminster Abbey and you can apply for these by clicking below. There are also spaces at the wreath-laying at the Cenotaph (or marching, if you prefer).

    Timings are as follows:

    5.00am: Dawn Service
    Location: Australian War Memorial, Hyde Park Corner

    The main service will take place at the Australian Memorial on Hyde Park Corner.  The service will be approximately 45 minutes in length and is open to the public.  After the main service there will be wreath-laying at the New Zealand Memorial, also at Hyde Park Corner. 

    There is no reservation required but arrival from 4.00am is suggested.

    London Legacy volunteers will be selling pins to support the families of fallen servicemen so do seek them out!

    The Intercontinental Hotel on Hyde Park Corner serves a (chargeable) early breakfast with ANZAC biscuits. Full Monty.

    9:00am: Gallipoli Memorial wreath-laying

    Location: St Paul’s Cathedral Crypt

    This is organised by the Gallipoli Association and is open to the public. The short ceremony is attended by representatives of the Australian, British, New Zealand and Turkish governments. Arrive by 8:45am.

    11.00am: Wreath Laying Ceremony and Parade

    Location: The Cenotaph, Whitehall

    Following a march onto Whitehall, a requiem is read and at 11.00am the High Commissioners for New Zealand and Australia will lay the first wreaths.  Wreaths are then laid by representatives of the UK government, High Commissioners and Ambassadors, as well as representatives from various service and ex-service organisations.

    Arrival by 10.30am is recommended.  The service will conclude at approximately 11.15am, allowing time for the short walk to Westminster Abbey if you have reserved a seat there.

    12.00pm: Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving

    Location: Westminster Abbey

    The Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving to mark ANZAC Day commences at 12.00 noon.  Guests must be seated by 11.45am and the service will last approximately one hour.

    Tickets are limited and are allocated by the High Commissions. Britain-Australia Society members may apply via our office for a special allocation as above. Non-members can can apply via the public application page.


    Other services are held around the UK and the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions strive to send representatives to each of these. Here is a selection:


    Saturday 27th April, 3pm

    A service will be held in St Andrew the Great Church, St Andrew’s Street, Cambridge CB2 3AX. This church is noted for having Captain Cook’s wife and two of their children buried beneath the altar. The service is supported by the County officials, the British Legion and several other organisations.

    All welcome to join the service, no need to book. Tea and ANZAC biscuits served after the service with a chance to meet old frinds and make new ones.

    The Norfolk Branch of the Britain-Australia Society will be holding their annual ANZAC Day Commemorative Service at St. Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich on Sunday 28th April. Refreshments and ANZAC biscuits will be served after the service. RSVP’s should be sent to the address above.

    Starting at 11:30 is the Branch Annual General Meeting (members only).

    From 12:00 a Reception will be held at the Infantry Officers’ Mess Warminster followed by a lunch.

    At 3pm (seated by 2:45) is the ANZAC Day Service of Remembrance at St. John the Evangelist, Sutton Veny followed by wreath laying at the War Memorial in the churchyard.

    Afternoon Tea at Sutton Veny Village Hall will be served at 4pm.

    An Anzac Service will be held in the Millennium Chapel followed by wreath-laying at the Gallipoli Memorial.

    The Anzac parade and service, organised by the Staffordshire Royal British Legion will be led by RBL’s County Padre.  Following the sounding of The Last Post and Reveille there will be a Wreath Laying Ceremony.

    Location:  Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Memorial, The Southern Cemetery, Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester M21 7GL

    The RBL Northenden Branch hold a service to commemorate Anzac Day and to remember the Gallipoli Campaign 1915-1916. Note: please use the Barlow Moor Road entrance to the cemetery. The cemetery holds a number of ANZAC graves of those who died during the 1st World War, in The 2nd Great Western Field Hospital based nearby. Elsewhere in The Southern Cemetery, are a number of ANZAC casualties, who died in the 2nd World War and are buried in Manchester. After the Service the congregation is invited for light refreshments at The Northenden Social Club, 408-412 Palatine Road, Northenden, Manchester M22 4JT.

    The Trustees of the Scottish National War Memorial in association with RBL (Scotland) and Historic Scotland will hold the annual Anzac/Gallipoli Day Service.   Note: For reasons of venue capacity etc., only those in possession of a ticket issued by RBL (Scotland) representatives will be admitted – we will update details of how to obtain as ticket as soon as possible.
