    Arthur Phillip Birthday Commemoration Service

    10th October 2014
    11:00am to 2:00pm

The Britain-Australia Society has for many years recognised Admiral Arthur Phillip RN  (born October 11th, 1738) on or near his birthday with a service at St Nicholas, Bathampton (where he and his wife are laid to rest) and a lunch in the Bath Guildhall.

Admiral Phillip was the first Governor of New South Wales and overcame huge obstacles to lay the foundations of modern Australia. After a distinguished naval service, Admiral Phillip retired to Bath, where he lived at 19 Bennett Street until his death in 1814.

This year the Britain-Australia Society Education Trust with the great assistance of the West Country Branch of the Society embarked on projects intended to recognise further, to commemorate and to pay due British tribute to Admiral Arthur Phillip RN (1738-1814). A commemorative sculpture has been installed as a tribute to the Admiral and to the First Fleet of eleven ships he commanded as Captain RN  in 1777-78  that bore the first settlers from England 15,063 nautical miles to found the colony of New South Wales

The church of St Nicholas at Bathampton has erected a series of lit panels which illustrate Phillip’s achievements; and has illuminated his ledgerstone in the Australia Chapel.

This year we are graced by the presence of the Australian High Commissioner, HE The Hon Alexander Downer AC.

The service is free to attend and will be followed by a reception in the Bath Guildhall with a charge to be decided.

    • Tea and coffee will be available from 10:00 in the Miller Room next to the Church
    • Thanksgiving Service, 11:00 a.m. at St Nicholas Church, Bathampton
    • The Service will be taken by: The Ven. Andy Piggott, Archdeacon of Bath
    • Civic Reception from 12.30 in the Guildhall, Bath by the Right Worshipful The Mayor of Bath
    • Lunch at 1:15 pm in the Banqueting Room at the Guildhall

    Honoured Guests:

    • His Excellency the Hon Alexander Downer AC, Australian High Commissioner
    • The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Cherry Beath
