Book Launch - Menzies the Forgotten Speeches

Book Launch – Menzies the Forgotten Speeches

18th August 2017
6:00pm to 7:00pm

The Menzies Research Centre is hosting a book launch for “Menzies – the Forgotten Speeches” by Research Fellow Dr David Furse-Roberts in the presence of HE Alexander Downer AC, Australian High Commissioner to the UK.

As war still raged in 1942, Menzies sat down to formulate his view of the peace to come, where the needs and aspirations of a broad cross-section of Australians would be addressed, throwing aside class politics and division. He made a radio broadcast which sought to engage and encompass those who fit neither in the industrial and landed elite nor the working proletariat, the middle, ordinary, forgotten Australians.

This speech, and other contemporary, previously unpublished speeches are brought into the light by the author.

Few politicians captivated an audience quite like Bob Menzies. His passion, intellect and humour speak as clearly from the printed page as when delivered from a platform. Yet remarkably, his many brilliant speeches have been largely forgotten, preserved only in original typewritten manuscript hidden in the vaults. The selection brought back to life in this volume will entertain, challenge and inspire in equal measure.

Registration is necessary by 14 August.

Location: History Department, Room S8.05, 8th Floor, King’s College (Strand)
