    Gallipoli memorial service in Norfolk

    20th September 2014
    2:30pm to 6:00pm

All are very welcome to attend this memorial service
Courtesy Rev. Michael Brock of St Nicholas Church, Dersingham, Norfolk.

Dersingham is ideally situated close to the Royal Sandringham Estate. After the Gallipoli Memorial Service visitors might care to spend weekend exploring King’s Lynn, Castle Rising, the Royal Sandringham Estate and other attractions in this very rural ‘Nelson’s County’. Excellent, affordable accommodation is available in King’s Lynn and Dersingham. An informal dinner will be held on the Saturday evening to which everybody is invited.

St Nicholas Church in Dersingham will be the setting for the Annual Gallipoli Service. This year the service will be conducted at 2.30 for 3pm on the Saturday. The service will be conducted by the Rev Michael Brock, and will be attended by official representatives from Britain, Turkey, New Zealand and Australia. Traditionally, the Mayors and King’s Lynn and Hunstanton also attend the service, and will be joined by members of the Royal British Legion, the Britain-Australia Society, London Legacy, Ambulance, Police and the Fire Service. Flags of all nations who participated in the Gallipoli campaign will be prominently displayed.

After the service, tea and coffee and Anzac biscuits will be served in the adjoining Church Hall. Guests will be welcomed by G&DI President John Crowe. ‘This is the tenth year that the service has been held’, Mr Crowe explained. ‘Last year we had our best attendance ever with over 190 guests, including 27 standard bearers and 18 wreaths were lain.’

The Gallipoli Memorial Service is now a well-established event aimed at appealing to a broad cross-section of age groups. For example, last year Guides and Scouts from Dersingham were invited to participate, together with Cadets from the Army, Navy and Air Force. Bugler Derek Dunstone from Hadleigh in Suffolk has kindly agreed to play The Last Post and Reveille as part of this year’s service.

‘This is now a well-established annual event’, explained Mr Crowe, and it will be a wonderful opportunity to meet other people who share the same interests over a cup of tea. We always have a good attendance from people whose relatives served at Gallipoli. My own father saw action at Suvla Bay and was wounded on 12 August 1915.’
