B-AS Lecture with LBS 2018

B-AS Lecture with LBS 2018

16th May 2018
6:00pm to 8:30pm

In co-operation with the Australia New Zealand Club  of the prestigious London Business School we are pleased to present the Britain-Australia Society Lecture.

The Britain-Australia Society Lecture features an eminent individual who can speak with authority on an aspect of the British-Australian relationship. We are very pleased to be able to announce our speaker for 2018, Professor Clement Macintyre, who is eminently qualified to address this topic.

The event will be held at the school’s impressive building, picturesquely set on the edge of Regent’s Park.

There will be ample opportunity for networking over drinks and canapés before and after the presentation by our eminent guest speaker. We hope for kind weather so that we can start with our sparkling wine in the garden overlooking Regent’s Park.

Prof. Macintyre is an expert on UK politics from the University of Adelaide and believes that the British European referendum result has left room for negotiations that couldn’t have happened before.

“The opposition to high levels of immigration in the UK that lay at the centre of some of the Brexit campaigning was making it harder for Australians in some respects to land visas and secure work arrangement because there was increasing pressure for the government to crack down across the board.”

The UK economy has relied on workers from the EU to fill many skilled and unskilled jobs. Professor Macintyre has said it is now likely those jobs would be open to people from other parts of the world, particularly Commonwealth countries.

Under the old prospect, what we were confident about was that as long as the UK was part of the EU, there was unlikely to be any change for the visa requirements for Australians in the UK… This vote at least opens the door to negotiation that could lead to outcomes that are favourable for Australian people who want to spend some time in and live and work in the UK.
