17th April 2015
6:00pm to 11:55pm
Lindsay Birrell, Chief Executive Officer of London Legacy, invites our members and friends to attend the ANZAC Centenary Ball in the opulent surroundings of the Australian High Commission Ballroom. This evening commemorates the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli.
VIP Guests include:
- His Excellency the Australian High Commissioner Alexander Downer AC
- Lt Col Gordon Birdwood
- His Excellency the New Zealand High Commissioner to the UK Sir Lockwood Smith KNZM PhD
- His Excellency Mr Abdurrahman Bilgiç Turkish Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the UK
- Randolph & Catherine Churchill
A sumptuous 3 course dinner with accompanying quality wines and beer will be bracketed by musical accompaniment from a wide array of talented musicians including a harpist, blues singer, jazz band, soprano and tenor.
The traditional ANZAC Service will be followed by a silent auction with an enticing array of items and a raffle.
Dancing and a very reasonable cash bar continues until midnight.
Lt Col Gordon Birdwood is Guest of Honour. He is the great nephew of Field Marshal The Lord Birdwood of Anzac and Totnes, better known to Australians and New Zealanders as Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood, commander of the Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli.
Lieutenant Colonel Birdwood will kindly provide us with an address tonight where he will speak about his Great Uncle who has been described by some as being the ‘Soul of Anzac’.
