Menzies Centre Film – “The Unlucky Australians”

31st May 2017
6:15pm to 9:30pm

The Menzies Centre for Australian Studies and La Trobe University’s Centre for the Study of the Inland are showing The Unlucky Australians with the film’s director as special guest speaker.

The Unlucky Australians (1973) Directed by John Goldschmidt

In the early 1970s, British filmmaker and civil rights campaigner John Goldschmidt travelled to Australia to make a film for Associated Television UK about the unfolding struggle for Aboriginal rights. He met the author Frank Hardy in Sydney and learned of the Gurindji people’s ongoing campaign for land rights, the subject of Hardy’s book The Unlucky Australians.

Goldschmidt’s film was screened on British TV in 1973 but was never broadcast in Australia, apart from projected on the side of a truck to the Gurindji themselves.
