The Story of the Kelly Gang

    30th May 2015
    4:00pm to 5:10pm

Our partners the Tait Memorial Trust offer the following event…

The Story of the Kelly Gang, directed by Charles Tait in 1906, was the longest narrative film yet seen, with an original running time of more than an hour. In 2007, it was listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register as the world’s first surviving full-length feature film.

Tracing the life of the infamous outlaw and bushranger Ned Kelly, the film was made only 26 years after his execution and shot over a six-month period largely on the Chartersville estate at Heidelberg, later to become one of Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Just seventeen minutes of Tait’s silent classic are known to have survived, including the crucial scene showing Kelly’s last stand. The footage has been restored by the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA), and this special screening will have a live piano accompaniment.

After the film, the audience will hear the fascinating story of how Charles Tait’s ground-breaking work was made, then lost, then discovered again by his grandson Angus Forbes. The latter has also written a screenplay treatment about his grandfather, Charlie and the Gang.

Forbes will be talking with Ian Henderson, director of the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies and Stephen Morgan, PhD in Film Studies at King’s College.
