WW1 Centenary with Commonwealth War Graves

    22nd March 2018
    6:00pm to 8:00pm

The Britain Australia Society is holding a Reception with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on Thursday 22 March at 6pm-8pm in the Downer Room at Australia House.

We are very pleased that HE The Australian High Commissioner, Alexander Downer, is attending this Reception in this important year of the Armistice Centenary. We are also fortunate to have CWGC’s Chief Historian, Dr. Glyn Prysor as our main speaker, who will talk about the WW1 Commemorations from the Somme to Flanders and the Salient. CWGC’s own Centenary programme in 2017 commenced with a Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, as well as, the impressive Poppies Wave display at Plymouth Naval Memorial.

More details of this reception will be provided as they become available but please save the date for this important event.

About the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

The CWGC has 1300 staff, 850 of whom are gardeners and they mow the equivalent of 1,000 football pitches every week as well as tending the other parts of the gardens of over 23,000 locations in 154 countries.

The cemeteries are for those who died in battle or those who died of their wounds later, possibly in a different location. More than 935,000 are identified casualties, while almost 212,000 are unidentified. Nearly 760,000 names of those missing are inscribed on memorials.

His Excellency the Australian High Commissioner will be in attendance and we will hear from the CWG’s Chief Historian Dr Glyn Prysor.
