New British Ambassador to Japan

New British Ambassador to Japan

Published 8th April

The Society is very pleased to note that His Excellency Paul Madden CMG has been named as the next Ambassador to Japan for the United Kingdom and will assume the post in January 2017.

Paul has been a good friend of the Society since his stint as High Commissioner to Australia. He spoke at the President’s Dinner in 2014 and also presented the inaugural Britain-Australia Society Lecture in 2015.

The appointment to Australia may have had something to do with the auspicious date of Paul’s birth, in addition to his plentiful diplomatic skills.  His Japanese appointment is something of a “coming-home” as before entering the Diplomatic Service he studied Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and at Kamakura, Japan. His first posting was also in Tokyo.

He has been hinting to us that he has been learning some language skills, so we have been speculating on whereabouts his next posting was going to be. We wish him all the best.
