In memoriam Sir John Swire CBE DL
Published 28th November
The Britain-Australia Society sadly reports the passing of our Honorary Vice President Sir John Swire CBE DL.
The Swire Group has supported the Britain-Australia Society since its inception and Sir John, a good friend of our past Director-General Sir Geoffrey Errington, took a deep, personal interest.
Sir John was Eton-educated and graduated from St Antony’s College, Oxford of which he later became an Honorary Fellow.
He started his career at the family firm in 1950 and eventually became Chairman and President of a vast trading and aviation empire.
He was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1977 and was knighted in the 1990 New Year Honours.
Sir John served on the Advisory Council of the Stanford Graduate School of Business and served as the Deputy pro-Chancellor of the University of Kent.
He died on 28 November 2016 at the age of 89.
A representative of the Britain-Australia Society will attend Sir John’s memorial service.
