A confession from Boris Johnson

A confession from Boris Johnson

Published 14th August

The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs elicits chuckles from the audience as he admits to the Lowy institute in Sydney that he became a “Les Paterson” after a youthful trip to Australia… a “self-appointed and unwanted ambassador for Australia”.

An upbeat, amusing and interesting talk covering a broad scope, including:

  • a thought-experiment about whether the Polly Waffle would pass muster as chocolate, had Australia joined the EEC, to
  • rejecting the “very slight gloom and negativity that is emanating in some distinguished corners” in the light of Britain being about to follow Australia’s example of successfully going it alone
  • the aspirations of Britain to join ASEAN, and
  • shipping boomerangs from Leighton Buzzard to Australia!
