    Vale John, Viscount Slim

Viscount Slim passed away on January 12th 2019, less than 3 months after his beloved wife Elizabeth (known to everyone as Buffy).Today was a memorial service at the Guards’ Chapel for the life of Colonel John Douglas Slim, 2nd Viscount Slim, OBE, DL, FRGS.

John was Chairman of the Britain-Australia Society from 1979 to 1984 and thereafter served as Vice-President. His chairmanship was typical of all of the many posts he held with multiple military and civilian associations… he was continually involved, interested and concerned and lent his not inconsiderable expertise and persuasion to further its success.

Born to a father who was legendary in Australia and having worked for some time in Australia John did have a real fondness for the country. The other places besides Britain that were close to his heart are Nepal (home of his beloved Gurkhas), and the land of his birth, India.

He went on to a military and commercial career, touching the lives of many and leaving with all of us the enduring memory of a man with a very human touch, mixing no-nonsense pragmatism with an omnipresent humour. The room really did brighten when he entered. An utterly delightful and admirable man who continued public service into his 90s lending expertise to debates in the Upper House of Parliament.

The memorial service echoed these sentiments. Tributes from family conveyed the sense that the good in the Slim family has transmitted through generations and, as John said at Buffy’s service, “will go on”.
