    100th Birthday of Lord Carrington

    Published 6th June

Peter Carington KG, GCMG, CH, MC, PC, DL, 6th Lord Carrington, was born exactly 100 years ago today. His 25th birthday coinciding with D-Day.

Lord Carrington was the major force behind the formation of The Cook Society (1969) and the Britain-Australia Society (1971) and took an active interest in the welfare of these up to his passing in July last year.

Over his 99 years Peter Carington achieved so much that it is impossible to aptly summarise, including distinguished service with the Grenadier Guards at “Bridge Too Far” Nijmegen; as High Commissioner to Australia; Defence Secretary; Chairman of the Conservative Party; Foreign Secretary; Secretary-General of NATO; Chancellor of the University of Reading; and Chairman of Christies. He was the Father of the House of Lords up to his death.

Selfless and dedicated throughout his life and quick-witted into his 90s, he is remembered with admiration as an exceedingly able and good man, and as a truly honourable one.
